It has been a fabulous couple of weeks at RID. My focus has been on meeting with the staff to understand and assess the administration of RID programs and services. The staff has been wonderful in providing the information necessary to move forward with the priorities established by the board. I am impressed with the staff’s impeccable work ethic and demonstrated passion for our service to the profession.
Last week, Brenda Walker Prudhom, RID President, came to headquarters in Alexandria, VA, to provide me with an orientation on as much as possible about RID. She shared an in-depth background of RID’s history, a look at current issues facing the organization and then we collaborated to set goals for the future of RID. I deeply appreciate the time she spent with me, one-on-one. Our meetings accelerated my learning curve.
In addition to President Prudhom’s visit, we had the honor of hosting the Commission for Collegiate Interpreter Education (CCIE) board meeting. CCIE is a body that provides accreditation for interpreter training programs. In addition to the CCIE, Brenda and I also met with other key stakeholders including Mano a Mano and NCIEC. The more I dive into all that comprises RID from the members, stakeholders, volunteers, staff, and board, to the programs and services, advocacy and external impact on the profession, the more I realize that there is one (well at least one) common goal…achieving excellence in interpreting.
The RID Learning Tour continues and I truly appreciate the member interaction that is occurring both virtually and in person. We are full steam ahead at headquarters and I hope that you are already seeing some impact from the transition – especially in the area of communications. I have connected with a number of members these past weeks and have reached out to those expressing their concerns via Facebook posts or Tweets. Please continue to use these avenues and others to reach out to us. We WILL respond and we WANT to dialogue with you about issues important to you. This connection enables us to better serve the needs of our members.
At the end of February, RID headquarters will be hosting an open house for you to join in this dialogue on the issues important to you and to meet the staff at RID and learn about our work. To accommodate schedules, especially the unpredictable and diverse schedules of our members in the profession, headquarters will be open from 1 – 7 pm on Monday, February 25, Wednesday February 27 and Friday, March 1, with a reception held on Friday from 5 – 7 pm at RID headquarters. RID President Brenda Walker Prudhom will join us as well on March 1st, so we hope you can come visit us. For those who can’t make it to Alexandria, VA, we are working on scheduling online video chats and meet-ups in the very near future. We are looking forward to meeting you in-person and online!
