ASL Educational Interpreters

Permanent and Substitute (daily and long-term) Positions Available
Location: Frederick County, Maryland
The Educational Interpreter provides interpreting services for Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals within the FCPS community and reports to the Coordinator of Interpreting Services. The educational interpreter’s primary function is to facilitate communication between the students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and their teachers, peers and others in the educational environment. In addition, the educational interpreter is required to facilitate communication for parents, staff/faculty and other members of the community who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing at meetings or other FCPS sponsored events.

Reporting directly to the Coordinator of Interpreting Services, the Educational Interpreter I performs the following duties:
Facilitates communication through the following activities
Interprets/transliterates information, accurately conveying the thought, intent, and spirit of the sender in the communication mode determined by the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) team. (Note: It is not the interpreter’s responsibility to select the mode of communication to be used.)
Directs student’s questions or comments to the teacher and the teacher’s questions or comments to the student.
Interprets/transliterates for students, parents and employees and other professionals in situations outside the classroom as appropriate and assigned.
Fosters appropriate use of an interpreter in a variety of settings.
Coordinates classroom and facility logistics by
Positioning self in a place that provides the best distance, lighting, background and angle for student viewing teacher, media and interpreter.
Advocating the use of closed captioning and other technology devices.
Uses preparation time effectively
To acquire and become familiar with instructional materials, including topical content and technical vocabulary in textbooks and other media.
To increase professional knowledge.
Maintain and continue professional growth and development.
Complies with the Code of Ethics set forth by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Interpreting Services.
