Continuing Education

“Excellence in the delivery of interpreting and transliterating services is contingent upon the pursuit of lifelong learning (Motion 96.43)”

The RID continuing education program has seven basic components:

1. CMP participants – All certified members of RID are required to participate in the CMP in order to maintain their certification.
2. ACET participants – Associate members of RID have the option to participate in the ACET program in order to have their continuing education tracked by RID.
3. RID approved sponsors – These are organizations and individuals who approve activities to make sure they meet the standards and criteria set forth by RID. Learn more about becoming a sponsor>>
4. The Professional Development Committee (PDC) – The PDC is the committee that oversees the CMP and audits sponsors.
5. The RID national office – The education department serves as the point of contact for participants and sponsors, processes all paperwork from sponsors, sends updates to the participants and sponsors regarding the program and manages members’ transcripts.
6. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) – The CEU is a nationally recognized unit of measurement for educational activities that meet established criteria for increasing knowledge and competency. One CEU is equal to ten (10) contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience, which is grounded in responsible sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction.
7. Maintenance of certification – Certified members who meet all the requirements of the CMP and maintain membership in RID retain their certification. All continuing education activities must involve endeavors that exceed the participants’ routine employment responsibilities.
