For Educational Interpreters

The more unified we become as an overall profession, the greater our voice and the more impact we will have.

Educational Interpreters have always been an important part of the mission and programs of RID; however, it has not been until recent that we have really embraced this population of interpreters into the organization

For many years, RID has received feedback from educational interpreters that they were overlooked as a population by the majority of publications, VIEWS articles, conferences and workshops that we provide.

We heard consistent themes such as:

"RID is for interpreters who interpret for adults, not children."

"RID’s CI and CT doesn’t include educational situations like I face on a daily basis, so it doesn’t apply to me and does not measure my skills."

Realizing that RID would have a greater voice and a larger volume of impact if we embraced other populations in the interpreting profession, we have taken great strides to become more inclusive to the educational interpreter and wholeheartedly welcome you into RID’s membership.

EIPA-RID Agreement

As of the fall 2006, RID began to recognize individuals who passed the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) written and performance tests at the level of 4.0 or higher as certified members of the association.

EIPA Interpreters Joining RID

Interpreters who have passed the EIPA written test and scored at least a 4.0 on the EIPA performance test may now join RID as certified members and maintain certification through the RID Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) and Ethical Practices System (EPS). New and current members of RID who wish to do so must use this membership application or call the RID national office at 703/838-0030.

Educational Interpreting Committee

Another means to assist RID in addressing the needs of the educational interpreter was the creation of the Educational Interpreting Committee. The EIC, which was established in August 2006, will take a focused look at the needs of educational interpreters and how RID can work to incorporate those needs with those of the profession as a whole.
